THE STORY OF RAVENWOOD KENNELS
Thank you for visiting our web site. If you are looking for a puppy to
purchase, no matter if you are an avid hunter or just want a hearth dog to sleep
by your fireplace, we hope you will consider a Ravenwood puppy for your next
Ravenwood Kennels is
owned by my husband and myself, Larry and Suzanne Hill. For over 30 years
Larry has hunted for ducks and geese, as well as upland birds such as grouse,
quail and pheasant. In 1986 we set about to purchase a good chocolate
Labrador and discovered there were very few to be found. Indeed, what dogs
we did see were either short, squatty bench type dogs, with highly questionable
hunting and retrieving instincts, or the more typical American field trial dog,
which often times more closely resembles a Greyhound. So... we began
researching pedigrees and studying photos.
Our breeding program here at Ravenwood is the result of that research. We
started out crossing the lines of FC/AFC Snake Eyes Double or Nothin' (
a black dog with chocolate recessive) with the lines of AM/CAN FC Ginger's
Chocolate August, who was a chocolate dog. Chocolate August was the
first chocolate field champion, and who with his son, FC/AFC Mueller's
Stormy Canada went on to become the first chocolate father-son
combination to achieve these titles.
Our two foundation bitches, Ravenwood's Ima Tootsie Roll, shown at left, and Ravenwood's Miss
Deflite are grand-daughters of European imports, who had completed their
European titles in both field and show. To be called a champion in Europe,
a dog must have shown the ability to excel in both areas. If he only has
bench show points, he is referred to a "show champion" or SH CH on the
The great dog CAN/AM FC/AFC
Aces High III, a black dog also with chocolate recessive, was sired by the above
named Snake Eyes. Our black male, Ravenwood's Ace of Spades CD, who is
also chocolate recessive, is a son of Aces High III. The dam of our Spade
has a Master Hunter title herself, and she is sired by the famous old dog
FC/AFC/CFC/CAFC Ironwood Tarnation. "Tar" as he was known came
from the best of foundation bloodlines, being a grandson of the great field
trial dog NFC/NAFC Super Chief and Dual Champion Dart of Netley Creek.
Needless to say, Spade is an
important part of our breeding program. In addition to Spade, we also have
a son of his, Ravenwood's Rum 'N Coke CD JH who is chocolate. To complete
our stud force, we have Ravenwood's Taxi's Tonka Toy CD and Steamer Be Brown
Too. "Steamer" has not been in competition due to an injury at a
young age, though he has sired a Master Hunter when bred to a daughter of Spade.
most of our puppies go to homes as family hunting dogs, we are extremely proud
of the fact that two of the dogs we have sold have went on to achieve their
Master Hunter titles, with one qualifying for the National Master Hunter
Test. She in turn, produced in her first litter, 7 Junior Hunter titled
dogs, with three of those currently working on their Senior Hunter titles.
Here at Ravenwood, we have several Junior Hunter titled dogs and also several
Obedience titled dogs.
The typical Ravenwood dog
weighs between 72 to 85 pounds, being a very deep dark chocolate or black.
Straight legs, with good angulation in the rear are emphasized, with heads being
neither very slim and overly refined nor massive with a Mastiff or Rottweiller
look. All breeding stock is tested for the intense desire and willingness
to hunt and retrieve. All are x-rayed and found to be free of dysplasia as
well of congenital eye defects such as PRA and cataracts. Fortunately we
have never had a problem in these areas. Dew claws are removed at five
days of age and the pups will have had their first or second shot before being
